Twelve Songs For Christmas: Eastbourne, UK

The next song from our Twelve Songs for Christmas series comes from Eastbourne, UK. It was written by Francis Appeadu-Mensah, Richard James Butt, and Geisiel Reis. The name of the song is ‘NYAME YE • DEUS É BOM‘, or ‘God is Good‘, and it is in multiple languages this time: Twi, Portuguese, and English. You can enjoy this beautiful collaboration of languages below or here.

About the song

A note from one of the songwriters: Richard James Butt

‘Nyame Ye’ began when two friends got together to write a song that could reflect the diversity of the church here in Eastbourne. After that initial idea, Geisel (from Brazil) and Francis (from Ghana) brought the idea to me and we wrote some more sections and finished off the song.

We wanted to reflect the scene of “every tribe, nation & tongue” displayed in Revelation 7. So, whilst in some ways it’s wholly “impractical”, we decided to include three languages in the song: Two from Ghana, Portuguese from Brazil and English from England.

The chorus reflects a desire for me as a native speaker of English to defer to my brothers’ languages first. English speakers don’t discover what is being sung until the second half of the chorus when the languages are translated into English. We hope listening to this song is a blessing to you!
